Needless to say, I'm scarred when it comes to the word 'tradition'.
Yet, I think there's something good about traditions, like family traditions. Granted, it can go overboard, but I love thinking back and remembering traditions my family had growing up.
Most Sunday nights when I was a little girl were spent at my Grandma's house. The families from my mom's side would all gather together, bringing a dish or two of goodies to share with everyone else. The cousins ran to the basement and started playing with the toys Grandma had down there, usually sprawled out from the last Sunday we were there. As I got older, "the cousins" started to be just me, my brother, and another boy a couple years younger than Chad. Instead of going downstairs, we would grab a plate of food, run to my Grandma's bed, duck under the covers, eat our food and watch cable all night.
I also remembered camping as a kid. My mom would take me, my brother and sister on bike rides, hikes, and on trips to the beach to go swimming and build sandcastles. Sometimes I'd just tag along with my dad and go fishing. Later when we got our ski boat, we skiied and kneeboarded most of the afternoons.
I asked Kyle about a family tradition he remembered. One he remembered was on Sunday mornings when his mom made a tube of Pillsbury cinnamon rolls. He and his brothers got to eat two rolls and fought over who got the middle one. His parents each got one. The tradition later changed to sharing a coffee cake from the local Dutch bakery.
Yesterday we had an outing that I would love to make into our own family tradition. We picked up a $5 pizza from Hy-Vee (which are really good, I might add) and headed out to a park to eat it by a picnic table, overlooking a lake. Afterward, we threw some of our crust pieces to the ducks. Here are some pictures from yesterday.

What a fun tradition! I don't think I've ever seen that play/movie. But...I don't know if I ever will:)
We have a lot of traditions that revolve around holidays. On Christmas Eve we always have chalupa and we're allowed to open one present each. For Easter we always have cinnamon rolls in the morning and then we give the boys their Easter baskets full of goodies. For lunch we then have ham, scalloped potatoes, dilly beans, and jiggler eggs, after which the boys do an egg hunt. For St. Pat's day we always throw a big party and serve Irish food to our friends. I started a little tradition while I was pregnant where I bought baby a present every month. It was actually a way to spread out all the purchases so we wouldn't go into debt in the 9th month, but it was more fun thinking of it as a present for the baby :o). I'm sure there are more that I'm not thinking of. I love traditions, and I hope that as the boys get older we can add more to our lives. Oh, and that Fiddler song is easy to get stuck in one's head. Thanks ;o) TRADITION!!!!
right now, we have a tradition of staying in our PJs on saturday and making a big breakfast -- hoping that someday, jones and the "other kids" :)will get to choose the menu and help cook. and if i'm going to all this trouble for breakfast, i make a TON, so we can put extra pancakes/waffles/etc in the freezer and have more for later. this week, i made overnight caramel french toast from "more butter" -- VERY tastey! :)
btw, thanks for the advice with the crib -- another friend does the same thing, i think we'll try it out! and what are you guys doing with weaning?
YOur park/pizza sounds like so much fun - great to enjoy the nice weather! Traditions and spring weather remind me of spring and summer evenings playing ball, quite often on our front yard with all the neighbor kids, usually Randy was the pitcher. Fun times! Oh - and quite often we sisters would go to the zoo with our little kids and grandma, and also feed the geese and ducks.... G-ma F.
