Isaiah: 5 weeks old

Isaiah turned five weeks yesterday.

He's an amazing little guy.  He's survived being 5 weeks early, a c-section, 10 days in the NICU, and an older brother who likes to show him love a little too violently.  (Yesterday I caught Caleb seeing what would happen when he dropped his tractor's rice-filled feed sacks on Isaiah's stomach from way up high.  Ouch.)

He's been growing slowly but surely.  Last week at his one month check-up he was 7 pounds 4 ounces.  Really, when you think about it, he's gained over a third of what he weighed at his lowest weight.  I'm not too worried about it yet.

Isaiah is still a little jaundiced, but according to the doctor, it's just a certain type of common, harmless breastfeeding jaundice that will go away soon.  No worries there either.

He's starting to wake up a little more.  When he came home from the NICU he was sleeping probably 22 hours a day.  Now it's not nearly as much, but there's still lots of sleeping going on, which I'm thankful for.  A tired baby is NOT a happy baby.

So far, I think he's going to have an easy going personality.   Most of the time I know why he's crying.  Other than that he just looks around and stares at things.  He hates having his diaper changed, but what newborn doesn't?

Speaking of newborn, he's still very much in that newborn stage.  Technically, if he was born on his due date (yesterday) he IS a newborn.  No smiles yet, which I'm sad about.  He makes it up in tons of smiles in his sleep.  Gas smiles?  Naaaahhhh.  I just think he's thinking of his family when he smiles in his sleep like that.

He's not completely at the newborn stage though.  He's still gaining a lot of abilities like lifting up his head and pushing his feet against something sturdy.

He likes his tummy time a lot.  In fact, he loves it so much he usually falls asleep during it. I don't move him because he gets his most restful sleep on his tummy.  At night when he sleeps on his back he grunts and whistles and snorts constantly.  I've gotten used to the grunts now and find it almost comforting to hear that he's still all there, snorts and all.

I'm curious about when he's going to catch up with the other babies.  I don't really care that he's "behind" but I like knowing what I should look for and what I can do to play with him and teach him things.  With Caleb, I followed the "Your Baby's First Year" religiously but with Isaiah, I have no idea if he's developmentally five weeks, three weeks, or three days.

One thing I know.  I absolutely love him dearly.  He's my little man--one of them at least--and I can't imagine anyone different.

My sister and parents came over this past weekend and here are a couple of snapshots from then.  Enjoy!

I didn't realize you had a c-section. Did you go into labor naturally, or was there some concern that made them want him out fast? I hope the recovery hasn't been to hard from that.

As far as development stuff, I worried a lot with Patrick hitting certain milestones at certain ages, but with Sammy and Ethan I gave up on that. I realized that each kid is different and will develop at their own pace. Esp. when they were a little early, it's not fair to compare them to their born at term or post-term peers. I've noticed, just with three boys that were all born at 36 1/2 weeks, that none of them hit the same milestones at the same time, and it's ok. They're all very different and I have learned not to expect them to be cookie cutter children :)

oh, and Patrick and Sammy both have that green and brown teeshirt that Caleb has on. Gotta love Old Navy ;)

He looks great lori! In all your shots he looks HUGE from what I can remember seeing him brand new. Don't be freaked out of the no-smiling thing. Lukka didn't smile for THREE MONTHS!! I just chalked it up to a serious personality :)
