potty training
teething
I have happy little breaks in between, don't get me wrong, but they are always lurking in the shadows.
I'm really clamping down on the potty training with Caleb now that he's three. I ran out of diapers on Sunday night and decided that I was only going to use cloth diapers (for nights, naps, and some outings), pull-ups, and undies.
This is probably the 5th or 6th time I've tried. I tend to give up pretty quickly and stopped after a couple days. Once I even made it a week and a half. This time is already going better. I've been getting a lot less resistance from Caleb even walking to the bathroom. We've always had an accident or two or three per day, but at least I'm sticking to my guns and not buying diapers for him.
I'm excited for Caleb that he's doing well, but I am not a fan of the process.
Thank the Lord for Stan and Jan Berenstain. They have made my potty training days much easier. I read at least 6 or 7 Berenstain Bear books per day. I have Mama's, Papa's, Brother's and Sister's voices perfected.
Caleb is pretty good at going, but really, does it have to take 15 minutes to pull down pants? Or 25 to pull them back up? If I would let him pull his pants on and off on his time, he would've peed three times in the process.
I set the timer every 30 minutes and then he tries to go. If he tries and says he can't we set it for 15 more minutes and try again. Repeat if necessary.
Is this the best way? I read a book about potty training once but I forgot everything. Gah.
Have you found that when your kid is tired, sick, hungry, etc., he's much less willing to do the whole potty thing?
And when does he start telling me he needs to go? That looks a LOOONG way off for us.
Tell me your potty training SECRETS. Please?
So THAT'S every 30 minutes of Caleb's and my life.
Teething is what's going on with Isaiah. The little man is cutting four top teeth. Two have just popped out and two are still slicing their way out. He's just miserable and you can tell. Normally he's almost always happy, but I really had to work for this smile here.
He's going to look so old when he gets these teeth in. No more baby look. I'm mourning a little.

On a better note: he's taking steps!! He falls promptly after two or three steps--well, he might be lunging the entire way with a few steps in between--but he's trying!! He loves it--and squeals at the praise he gets when he does it.
Here's a couple of those happy little breaks we've had.
Even though we got another round of snow, it wasn't terribly cold and we went out to enjoy the nice packing-snow weather.
Bath times are ALWAYS a nice break. I try and have either Kyle or I give the boys a bath almost every night. They love them, they usually play nicely together, and I hear more giggling in 20 minutes of bath time than I do all day from my boys. What is it about the water? Or being naked? Or the bubbles? Or the fact that mom or dad sits next to you for a full 20-30 minutes?

All of the above. :)

Re: Potty training....
My best advice is to just not even work at it until they're showing readiness. And by readiness, I mean, walking to the potty themselves and sitting down!
I have yet to hear of a kid who doesn't successfully potty learn at some age. The age range varies quite a bit though!
It might be more pleasant to wait until the weather gets warmer and Caleb can just be nakey-bottom all the time while practicing the potty stuff!
Lori, potty training is going well for Lukka, but we ALWAYS give him a "treat" afterword for going (and yes, silly, too, 1 for pee, 3 for poop in the potty!) PLUS it took a number (2-3) weeks of solid consistency (and me pulling out my hair, of course) to make it into our daily routine & him being fine with it.
ALSO, once they get used to goign on the potty and only wearing underwear (and not likign the feeling of staying wet in undies if they ahve an accident) they start to take longer and longer between times they need to go.
SO, for example, you're telling Caleb to go every 30 min...but in a week or two, that might be every 60-90 min...does that make sense? It also makes it go a lot easier, too.
Lukka has accidents if we're out for too long without remembering to take him to the potty, but it is becoming more rare.
Just don't forget to make him go BEFORE you bundle him up for outside, I've made that mistake too many times, lol!!!
PS-Looks like Ani & Isaiah are in the same boat--the reason she was pukey, whiney---she is cutting 2 teeth, too!
Ah geez, can we ever get ahead? :P
Sarah
I should mention, his "treat" is just a gummi fruit snack, but they're his favorite thing to eat that's special...that might be an incentive?
if i want emily to do something, i try "the gossip method"....so i tell daddy, like a secret (enough for her to hear me) anything i like her doing....like: "daddy, today emily pull down her pants all by herself", and daddy replay aproving the action, saying nice things about it....it works nicely for little things, specially if she start doing it and we act in that moment...
Potty-training caused much heartache around here and I wish I would've started it waaaaaay later than I did! (Meaning, we went through several rounds beginning before age 2.) Finally, when Liv was 3.5 I took away all diapers and pullups (during the day). It wasn't until she was 4 that the regular accidents stopped.
Some moms will plan a day or two where the kiddo runs around naked and is given beverages all day long to get used to the feeling of peeing. I know this method works for some.
potty training -- ack! we had a round late this summer (jones was 2.5 about) where he ran around naked for two days, lots of juice, etc. he peed everywhere and couldn't have cared less, and i about drove myself mad. i think he used the potty only a handful of times. i said we were done with it. we waited till november (2 years 9months), then i pulled out a stack of diapers and told him every time we passed them or thought about it for a week that when the diapers were gone, we were going to wear underwear and use the potty -- we watched a LOT of potty videos in that week, too. we talked and talked and talked about underwear and potty, etc. so after they were gone, we just dove in! i knew if i gave myself an out, i would just quit, because diapers were so much easier!! it wasn't too fun -- took about three weeks before he was consistently telling us he needed to pee. i took him to the potty in the morning, before nap, and before we left the house, but i otherwise let him tell me when he needed to go. we had a LOT of accidents those three weeks, but now he tells us without fail, so i guess it was worth it! now he wears diapers during nap and nitetime. we'll worry about nighttime training after a few months, life is busy at the moment.. mainly, we talked about it a lot, watched elmo potty videos and shimajiro (youtube it! its funny.. but the japanese subtitles are horrendously incorrect.)
poop, though.. now that's another matter entirely.. he screams if i even suggest him pooping on the potty, so we're taking a "sake of mommy's sanity" break. ;) every kid has their issue!
Rebecca pretty much potty trained herself. At 18 months she would tell us before she had to poop - I went right out and bought a potty chair! She took a break from that for a while. But was fully potty trained by 26 months. We used treats - M&Ms. She had her share of accidents, but we treated an accident as disobedience and she sat on her naughty spot. I think that was a big deterrent for her. She still wears a pullup to bed, but stays dry for naps.
Keep at it!
